In Greek mythology, Arethusa was the daughter of Nereus and Doris. The god Alpheus, son of the god Oceanus, fell in love with her by spying on her while she was bathing naked. Arethusa, however, escaped from his attentions, escaping on the island of Ortigia, in Syracuse, where the goddess Artemis turned her into a spring Zeus, moved by the pain of Alpheus, turned it into a river in turn, thus allowing him, from the Peloponnese, in Greece, to travel all over the Ionian Sea to join the beloved source. Even today the myth lives on the island of Ortigia thanks to the so-called Fonte Arethusa, a body of water that flows into the Porto Grande of Syracuse.
